DEGREE vs SKILL - What Really Earns in India?

Story of 2 friends from Bengal.

Rahul: B.A Pass. 5 years jobless. A file full of certificates, but an empty wallet. Every interview asks - "What work do you know?" No answer. Earning = ₹0.

Suman: Class 10 pass. Took 3 months Electrician training in Utkarsh Bangla. Now has his own shop. Earns ₹1,500 per day. That means ₹45,000 per month. People call him for work.

What is the difference?

A DEGREE gives you identity. A SKILL gives you INCOME.

3 Hard Truths:

1. Degree is Common, Skill is Valuable:

Every year 50 lakh graduates pass out. But companies want skilled people. An Electrician charges ₹500 for one visit. A Beautician earns ₹1,000 per bridal makeup. A Tailor earns ₹300 per blouse. Their demand never ends.

2. Degree = 3 Years & ₹3 Lakh. Skill = 3 Months & ₹0.

We spend 3 years of our life and our parents spend ₹3,00,000 to get a degree. After that, many students still have to spend more money to learn a skill to get a job.

But if you learn a real skill first - like Technical & Digital Skills(Web Developer, Graphic Designer, Data Entry Specialist, IT Support Technician, Mobile Phone Repair Technician), Construction & Trades(electrical work, Plumber, Carpenter, HVAC Technician, Welder),  Wellness & Personal Care(beautician work, Makeup Artist, Skin Care Specialist (Esthetician)), Creative & Craft Trades(Interior Designer, Jewelry Designer/Maker, Photographer, Upholsterer, Baker or Pastry Chef), Automotive & Mechanical(Auto Mechanic, Auto Body Repairer, Bicycle Mechanic) - you can start earning in just 3 to 6 months. And many government and private skill centers provide this training for free or at a very low cost, with tool kits and certificates included.

3. Degree Begs for a Job, Skill Creates a Job:

With a degree, you will stand in a line for a job. With a skill, you will start your own business and give jobs to others.

So, is Degree Useless?

No. Degree is your base. But degree alone will not fill your stomach in 2026.

My Formula: "Degree is the Number Plate of your car. Skill is the Engine. Without a number plate, police will stop you. But without an engine, your car will not move even 1 inch."

What do you choose? Only certificates or Real Earning Skills?
